女主人公文秀，出生在一个幸福的四口之家，有父亲、母亲和妹妹。"这个故事始于1975年的成都，当时是文革后期，"知青下山下乡"的运动仍在继续。文秀，作为一名知青，报名到四川偏远地区工作。起初，文秀在田里的一个奶牛场工作，后来被选中跟随西藏的老金去学习牧马。"老晋早年曾因藏人打架而被割去生殖器，一般人都没有性欲。老金爱这个十几岁的无辜女孩，给她打了水，洗了个澡。"文秀也越来越依赖老金。可是，半年后约定的场地还没来接文秀，所以她渐渐产生了焦虑的心理。"文秀的脾气变得暴躁起来，所有的怨气都发泄在老金身上。当我听说其他受过教育的年轻人成功地回到了城市时，文秀渴望他的家乡和城市的生活，所以他在推销员甜蜜的蜂蜜下献出了自己的童贞。"老金虽然知道文秀被耍了，但他说起来很难。"不久前，文秀成了有经济能力的人轮流玩的对象。老金忍无可忍地谴责文秀出卖自己的身体，文秀竟反驳道："卖不分！"文秀给了他的身体没有机会回到城里，却怀孕了，不知道是谁处理的。"老金带着文秀的怒火冲到现场。文秀在医院了解到，有人打断了他的脚趾头，以换取一个返回城市的机会。他还想给这个城市制造工业伤害的假象，但他做不到。文秀把枪给了老金，让老金开枪，最后老金绝望地射了文秀，然后和她一起死了。
